Job Description

The University of Manchester has a bold and exciting plan to be one of the top 25 Universities in the world by 2015. Towards this strategy, the University of Manchester has established the Dalton Nuclear Institute to make the University a leading world centre for nuclear research and education.

The Dalton Cumbrian Facility (DCF) will be The University of Manchester's iconic new £20 million experimental and educational facility on the Westlakes Science and Technology Park close to the Sellafield site. The facility will deliver world-leading nuclear research and education in the region. The DCF forms an integral part of Britain's Energy Coast Masterplan and will be the portal to The University of Manchester's full capability in West Cumbria.

Housing a multi-million pound investment in experimental facilities for nuclear science, the DCF will house up to 40 Staff and PhD students undertaking research across a number of nuclear themes, including:

" Radiation science and chemistry; " Nuclear engineering decommissioning; " Materials performance in nuclear environments; " Advanced manufacturing technology; and " Nuclear waste management and disposal.

The senior role of the Commercial Director has been created to develop and deliver a sustainable Business Plan for the facility. This will include the following key responsibilities: Strategic commercial leadership of the DCF, Operational management including Health and Safety, Communications and external engagement with key stakeholders, Managing link with NNL central laboratory and working with academic staff to develop research and higher learning programmes and publications.

Preferably educated to post-graduate level in a physical science or engineering field, you will be a member of an appropriate Professional Institution, with experience in business development, preferably at the industry/academia interface, in addition to experience of managing experimental facilities. Technical knowledge in the nuclear field is essential, as is experience of composing and delivering reports and presentations at a senior level.
